Places to visit – Lowestoft

Close to where our holiday lodges for saleLowestoft Beach are is the historic town of Lowestoft which boasts an impressive selection of activities and attractions that are sure to keep you busy and entertained during your day (or evening) out.

If you fancy a day at the beach during your lodge holiday then you’re in luck, as Lowestoft boasts a surprisingly large stretch of golden coastline where you can enjoy whether the sun is shining or not. During hot days the sand is the perfect place to relax on, as the beach is not only long but impressively wide too, so you definitely won’t be short of space and with each beach being awarded Blue Flag status, you can rest assured that they will be kept clean and tidy. This stretch of coastline is also known as the ‘Sunrise Coast’, as it is UK’s most easterly point, so if you’re standing on the beach looking out to sea in the early hours, you will be the first to see the sun rise! If you fancy a break from the sand, why not take a stroll through the beautiful Victorian gardens that line the rear of the sand. With benches and grassy areas, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic if you don’t want sand getting in your favourite sandwich! Two things that are definitely hard to miss on your day out to Lowestoft are the two 500foot piers heading out into the North Sea. The South Pier was extensively refurbished in 2008 and offers a selection of family entertainment that includes restaurants, cafes, shops, as well as a bowling alley and gaming centre. The North Pier also offers entertainment including arcades, a nightclub and rides suitable for children. If you would prefer entertainment that’s a little more suited to adults then the Marina Theatre makes a great choice. Here you will be able to enjoy a number of popular performances running all year round and believe it or not, the theatre is also home to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!

Further into the centre of town, you will find a great selection of high street shops, as well as a cinema, cafes and an excellent selection of restaurants where you are sure to find your favourite meal on the menu. If you love seafood, this is the place to try it, as many ingredients are sourced locally, so expect the fish to be fresh and even caught the same day! If you would like to take some fish away with you to cook later, that’s fine too, as there are a number of quality fishmongers in town that offer freshly caught fish at a very reasonable price. (Oh and don’t forget to try the local fish and chips).

If you like history then you’re sure to love the town’s selection of museums with many focusing on Lowestoft maritime history. Once of the best examples of this is the Royal Naval Patrol Service Association Museum that can be found on the first floor of the RNPS building. It is absolutely packed with fascinating naval history, with every single piece of wall space being used to display the many interesting items outlining the areas rich heritage. Some of these items include honours that were awarded to the brave individuals for outstanding service to their country. There is even a Victoria Cross on display as well as over 800 individual honours. There are also some informative photographs on display, as well as clothing (uniforms), personal possessions, flags and shields. It really is a fascinating insight into this important piece of national history.

Also, if you love wildlife we definitely recommend that you pay a visit to Africa Alive, which can be found just to the south of Lowestoft. Formerly Suffolk Wildlife Park, Africa Alive is without a doubt one of the best zoos in the region and offers a range of animals throughout its African themed enclosures. Some of the animals that can be found here include Chimpanzees, Lemurs, Monkeys, Porcupines, Vultures, Buffalo, Lions, Rhinoceros’, Giraffes, Lizards, Tortoises and even Snails & Cockroaches – so you can be sure that you will have plenty to see! You will also have plenty to do, as there are events on throughout the year and you can even handle some of the smaller animals. It’s not only a great place to keep the kids entertained but it’s great for adults too
